WELCOME TO
Sreemoolavasam

Sreemoolavasam was an ancient Buddhist centre located on the south west coast of Kerala. It was washed away or submerged in to the sea due to sea erosion or a tsunami, so unable to spot its exact location in these days. But many historians argues that it was located in Thrikkunnapuzha near Harippad in Alappuzha District connecting the archaeological finding related to Buddhism received from the nearby areas.

The discovery of an idol of Bodhisattva Halahala Lokeswara by M. Foucher during the excavations done at Gandhara region of Afghanistan with inscription “Dakshina Pathe Moolavasa Lokanatha” proves that it was a famous pilgrim centre of Buddhism in ancient days across Indian Subcontinent. There was also mention of Sreemoolavasam in Paliyam Copper Plates (AD 929 or AD 898) and ‘Mushika Vamsha’ of poet Atula.
